The opening of Calypso Applewhite‘s photographic exhibition at the Nitroglobus Roof Art Gallery, entitled “Ex Machina,” is currently underway.
As known, Nitroglobus is the historical art gallery owned by Dido Haas, who is also the artistic curator of the same.

I joined SL in February 2010. After a few months without any specific goal, I began exploring and decided to share my favorite places by photographing and sharing them. My leitmotiv was “All is not necessarily beautiful in SL, and what is, deserves to be shown whenever possible”.

I’m passionate about the avatar as a means of expression. Self-taught on Photoshop, and passionate about avant-garde and dystopian fashion, I stage my own character in minimalist settings to keep only the essential… the emotion.
The minimalism Caly talks about in her biography clearly sees in her photographic style. In fact, the artist does not add elements for the sake of enriching the scene; if anything, she enhances the few details she wishes to show (also through graphic tools such as Photoshop).
The theme that Calypso addresses in this photographic exhibition hosted at the Nitroglobus and officially open from this moment (6/07/2020 at 21:00), is the relationship between man and machine, understood in a broad sense as a robot equipped with his artificial intelligence.
You don’t have to be a prophet to understand that the relationship between man and machine will become ever closer. In modern times we can already interface with artificial intelligence through the use of virtual assistants such as Cortana, just to give an example.
Cinema has also successfully dealt with this theme: let’s think of the famous film entitled “Ex Machina,” made in 2015, written and directed by Alex Garland.
Calypso introduces her photo exhibition in this way.
Machines are, by definition, disembodied. They are far from us, human beings. However, by giving the machines the appearance of a woman, we tend to reduce the frontier that separates them from us.

A feeling of disturbing Freudian strangeness, but one that does establish a connection; one that is sort of similar to the one we feel for our fellow humans.
A connection that could be solidified by the possible presence of a real (Artificial) Intelligence in these machines.
An emotional hold that is exerted on us who are watching, to gradually redefine our way of apprehending these robots, avatars of our own groping.
An Artificial Intelligence cannot be reduced to a simple doll. It is above all a being with a perception significantly different from ours.
The woman-robot relationship is privileged both in cinematography and literature. Just as the woman is considered the weaker sex, so the machine could be that form of intelligence in search of social redemption in the future, perhaps not too far off.

E’ in corso proprio in questo momento l’opening della esisbizione fotografica di Calypso Applewhite al Nitroglobus Roof Art Gallery, intitolata “Ex Machina“.
Come noto, il Nitroglobus è la storica galleria d’arte di proprietà di Dido Haas che è anche il curatore artistico della medesima.
Al punto di atterraggio, cliccando sul flyer, è possibile prelevare le informazioni sulla esibizione fotografica e sull’artista. Calypso si presenta con queste parole.
Sono entrata in SL nel febbraio 2010. Dopo alcuni mesi senza alcun obiettivo specifico, ho iniziato a esplorare e ho deciso di condividere i miei luoghi preferiti fotografandoli e condividendoli. Il mio leitmotiv era “Tutto non è necessariamente bello in SL, e ciò che è, merita di essere mostrato ogni volta che è possibile”.

Sono appassionata dell’avatar come mezzo di espressione. Autodidatta con Photoshop, e appassionata di moda d’avanguardia e distopica, metto in scena il mio personaggio in ambienti minimalisti per mantenere solo l’essenziale… l’emozione.
Il minimalismo di cui parla Caly nella sua biografia di vede chiaramente nel suo stile fotografico. L’artista, infatti, non aggiunge elementi per il gusto di arricchire la scena, semmai valorizza i pochi elementi che desidera mostrare (anche attraverso strumenti grafici come Photoshop).
Il tema che Calypso affronta in questa esibizione fotografica ospitata al Nitroglobus e ufficialmente aperta da questo momento (6/07/2020 alle 21:00), è il rapporto tra l’uomo e la macchina, intesa in senso ampio come robot dotato di una sua intelligenza artificiale.
Non bisogna essere profeti per intuire che la relazione tra l’uomo e la macchina si farà sempre più stretto. Ai tempi moderni possiamo già interfacciarci con l’intelligenza artificiale attraverso l’uso di assistenti virtuali come Cortana, giusto per fare un esempio.
Anche il cinema ha trattato con successo questa tematica: pensiamo al celebre film intitolato proprio “Ex Machina”, realizzato nel 2015, scritto e diretto da Alex Garland.
Calypso introduce la sua mostra fotografica in questo modo.
Le macchine sono, per definizione, disincarnate. Sono lontane da noi, esseri umani. Tuttavia, dando alle macchine l’aspetto di una donna, tendiamo a ridurre la frontiera che le separa da noi.

Un sentimento di inquietante stranezza freudiana, ma che stabilisce un legame, simile a quello che proviamo per i nostri simili.
Una connessione che potrebbe essere solidificata dalla possibile presenza di una reale intelligenza (artificiale) in queste macchine.
Una presa emotiva che si esercita su di noi che stiamo guardando, per ridefinire gradualmente il nostro modo di arrestare questi robot, avatar del nostro stesso brancolare.
Un’Intelligenza Artificiale non può essere ridotta a una semplice bambola. È soprattutto un essere con una percezione significativamente diversa dalla nostra.
Il rapporto donna-robot è privilegiato sia nella cinematografia che nella letteratura. Così come la donna è considerata il sesso debole, allo stesso modo la macchina potrebbe essere quella forma di intelligenza in cerca di un riscatto sociale in futuro forse nemmeno troppo lontano.
