It is not easy to present the artist we meet today: the beautiful images speak for themselves and transport each observer into a different world, generated by her own interiority.
While representing a virtual world, they are full of realism and the feelings they inspire are true and powerful. Through lights and shadows, small details or open spaces, immersed in rarefied atmospheres, they are transformed into vaguely melancholy fantasies that manage to strike even the most distracted glances. This sensitive and talented artist is DeFoe and after reading this interview, I urge you to go and look at her photostream on Flickr.
Jarla: First let’s get acquainted, tell us a little about yourself.
DeFoe: I am a reserved and introspective person, I do not like worldliness very much and I cultivate a small circle of friends with whom I share some interests including photography, music, and even a little cinema. For me, image and music have always been a natural combination, in fact, my images are always accompanied by a piece of music. I love nature and animals very much, in fact, I have a dog and 2 cats.
Jarla: How did you come to Second Life and how your passion for photography was born?
DeFoe: Some time ago I read about Second Life in a magazine and it intrigued me.
I have always had a passion for photography even in Real Life and discovering that I could also photograph in Second Life was a pleasant surprise. Sometimes I also post some real photos on my Flickr.
Jarla: When and why do you decide to take a photo?
DeFoe: When I happen to come across something that arouses my interest but is often the result of an introspective process with which I embody my unexpressed emotions. The musical component then becomes a natural counterpart to my compositions, formulating a three-dimensional perceptual image, trying to reproduce an almost cinematic glimpse.
Jarla: What matters most to the final result: what are you feeling, or passing it on?
DeFoe: Both things. What I feel I hope to convey, but emotions are subjective.
Jarla: Let’s talk about post-processing, how does work for you?
DeFoe: The post-processing is the salient moment for the creation of the image; it is what allows me to give shape to what will then be the final result. The use of textures, lights, and contrasts helps to give the image a patina of realism mixed with oneiric.
Jarla: Many of your images have evanescent atmospheres, some a little dreamy others more disturbing, but paradoxically it is those atmospheres that give realism to your photos, what do you think about it?
DeFoe: I always look for realistic figures that give the observer a recognisability of reality, which I however insert in deliberately surreal and dreamlike graphic contexts that transport him/her into a different dimension.
Jarla: There are hardly any people in your landscapes, is it a thoughtful choice or more instinctive?
DeFoe: I’ve never thought about it, so it’s an instinctive choice.
Jarla: Your style is slowly changing from the first published photos, it seems that you have moved from a broader and global vision to a more particular and intimate one, interested in details, what led you in this direction?
DeFoe: It is not a stylistic change dictated by a deliberate and conscious choice, but slow evolution of my perception and of my thematic research.
Jarla: In your Flickr profile, you ask if we know the feeling of wanting to disappear completely, do you want to tell us about this feeling?
DeFoe: It is the feeling you get when you feel overwhelmed and helpless in a world you don’t feel part of.
Jarla: Your “best” flaw?
DeFoe: I’d say accuracy.

Non è facile presentare l’artista che incontriamo oggi: le bellissime immagini parlano da sole e trasportano ciascun osservatore in un mondo diverso, generato dalla propria interiorità.
Pur rappresentando un mondo virtuale, sono piene di realismo ed i sentimenti che ispirano sono veri e potenti. Attraverso luci ed ombre, piccoli dettagli o spazi aperti, immersi in atmosfere rarefatte, si trasformano in fantasie vagamente melanconiche che riescono a colpire anche gli sguardi più distratti.
Questa artista sensibile e talentuosa è DeFoe e dopo la lettura di questa intervista vi esorto ad andare a guardare il suo photo stream su Flickr.
Jarla: Per cominciare, facciamo conoscenza, parlaci un po’ di te.
DeFoe: Sono una persona riservata ed introspettiva, non amo molto la mondanità e coltivo una piccola cerchia di amici con cui condivido alcuni interessi tra cui la fotografia, la musica e anche un po’ di cinema. Per me immagine e musica sono sempre stati un binomio naturale, infatti le mie immagini sono sempre accompagnate da un brano musicale. Amo molto la natura e gli animali, infatti ho un cane e 2 gatti.
Jarla: Come sei approdata su Second Life e come è nata la passione per la fotografia?
DeFoe: Tempo fa ho letto di Second Life su una rivista e mi ha incuriosito. Ho sempre avuto la passione per la fotografia anche in Real Life e scoprire che potevo fotografare anche in Second Life è stata una piacevole sorpresa. A volte posto anche delle foto reali sul mio Flickr.
Jarla: Quando e perché decidi di scattare una foto?
DeFoe: Quando mi capita di imbattermi in qualcosa che stuzzica il mio interesse; ma spesso è il risultato di un processo introspettivo con cui incarno le mie emozioni inespresse. La componente musicale diventa quindi una naturale controparte alle mie composizioni, formulando un’immagine percettiva tridimensionale, per riprodurre uno scorcio quasi cinematografico.
Jarla: Cosa è più importante per il risultato finale: quello che provi o riuscire a trasmetterlo?
DeFoe: la post produzione è il momento saliente per la creazione dell’immagine; è ciò che mi permette di dare forma a quello che poi sarà il risultato finale. L’uso di texture, luci e contrasti contribuisce a conferire all’immagine una patina di realismo misto ad onirismo.
Jarla: Molte delle tue immagini hanno atmosfere evanescenti, alcune un po’ sognanti altre più inquietanti, ma paradossalmente sono proprio quelle atmosfere che danno realismo alle tue foto, come la pensi a riguardo?
DeFoe: Cerco sempre elementi realistici che diano all’osservatore una riconoscibilità della realtà, che però inserisco in contesti grafici volutamente surreali e onirici che lo trasportano in una dimensione diversa.
Jarla: Non ci sono quasi mai persone nei tuoi paesaggi, è una scelta ponderata o più istintiva?
DeFoe: Non ci ho mai pensato, quindi credo che sia una scelta istintiva.
Jarla: Il tuo stile sta lentamente cambiando dalle prime foto pubblicate, sembra che tu sia passata da una visione più ampia e globale ad una più particolare e intima, interessata ai dettagli, cosa ti ha portato in questa direzione?
DeFoe: Non è un cambiamento stilistico dettato da una scelta deliberata e consapevole, ma una lenta evoluzione della mia percezione e della mia ricerca tematica.
Jarla: Nel tuo profilo Flickr, chiedi se conosciamo la sensazione di voler scomparire completamente, vuoi parlarci di questa sensazione?
DeFoe: È la sensazione che provi quando ti senti sopraffatto e impotente in un mondo di cui non ti senti parte.
Jarla: Il tuo “migliore” difetto?
DeFoe: Direi precisione.
